The Cycle of Contribution: Making the World Better While Making Yourself Happier
In the pursuit of a meaningful life, we often start by looking inward—examining our goals, our growth, and our desires. But there is a profound truth that every great spiritual and scientific leader eventually lands upon: True fulfillment is found in contribution.
When you dedicate yourself to making life better for those around you, your world expands. The heavy weight of personal "dread" often lifts when we shift our focus from our own problems to the potential of helping someone else.
The Happiness-Success Link
The Dalai Lama famously said: “If you want to be happy, make other people happy.” While this sounds like poetic advice, modern science backs it up. A major study by psychologists Sonja Lyubomirsky, Laura King, and Ed Diener (2005) revealed a surprising truth: Happiness precedes success. We are taught to believe that once we reach our goals, we will be happy. In reality, people who cultivate happiness first—often through acts of service and positive connection—are significantly more likely to reach their goals. Positive emotions build the psychological resources, energy, and creativity needed to succeed.
The Lesson: Untangle your happiness from your future goals. Be happy now by contributing to others, and watch how much faster your own doors begin to open.
Three Ways You Can Contribute
Making the world a better place doesn't require a grand, global platform. It starts with how you show up in the small moments.
1. Through Creation
What are you putting into the world that wasn't there before? Whether you are building a business, writing a blog, or raising a family, ask yourself: “Is what I am creating great for the world?” When we align our work with "humanity-positive" goals, our daily labor takes on a sacred quality. If you find yourself in a career that feels soul-crushing, it may be because your "creation" isn't serving a higher purpose.
2. Through Charity (Time and Resources)
Charity isn't just about writing a check; it’s about the intentional distribution of your abundance.
-
Time: Offering your presence is often the most valuable gift you can give.
-
Volunteer: Lending your skills to a cause that matters.
-
Money: Supporting organizations that align with your values.
-
Knowledge: Sharing what you know to help someone else climb the ladder behind you.
3. Through Networking and Connection
We often think of "networking" as a way to get ahead. What if we viewed it as a way to connect others? By being a bridge between people, you create a ripple effect of goodness. Simply showing up with the intent to listen and connect can change the trajectory of someone's day—or life.
The Coaching Connection: Moving from Dread to Purpose
If you find yourself stuck in a cycle of "waiting to be happy," it might be time to re-examine your contribution.
In my coaching practice, we don't just look at how to get you what you want; we look at how your life can serve the world. When you find that "humanity-positive" alignment, the fear of "taking the leap" vanishes, replaced by a deep sense of purpose.
How will you show up in the world today?
